Which Financing Option is Best for Your Business

Which Financing Option is Best for Your Business A lot of entrepreneurs ask themselves: What is the best way to finance my business? In this article I will show you which financing option is best for your business given your capital needs, networking needs and stage. © Shutterstock.com | Syda ProductionsI will discuss (1) the business model specific factors such as capital needed and network needed, (2) the stages your company can be in, and (3) the financing options that fit best given your unique circumstances.BUSINESS MODEL SPECIFIC FACTORSThe two most important factors that distinguish business models are capital intensity (low versus high capital need) and importance of relationships (low versus high need of relationships to key decision makers). Some business models require you to invest a large amount upfront in order to enter the market. This costs can include product development, creating brand awareness or setting up a sales force. Business models with low capital needs include SaaS and consultancy services. Business models with high capital requirements encompass a shoe manufacturer or chemical factory. By intelligently testing your business model assumptions via a minimum viable product you can significantly lower your capital needs.S ome business models heavily require you to have a strong network to key decision makers in order for you to make sales. Business models with high importance of a good network include consulting services (e.g. management consulting, mergers acquisitions) and other business models where the purchase decision is made on executive level of your client. © Entrepreneurial InsightsBUSINESS STAGESThe business stages must be considered when choosing the right financing option for your business. Lets have a look at the major business stages.IDEA STAGEIn this stage you have a basic idea of which product or service you would like to provide which customers, but you still have to think through the whole business model and define the assumptions to be tested. Brainstorming with friends about business ideas is fun and helps you clarify your rough business model.CONCEPT STAGEYour basic idea has developed and you have a good grasp how you want to enter the market (which marketing channels, sales ch annels, budgets), what are the product requirements, and how you will make a profit on selling your products and services. In addition, you may have developed a financial model as well as a first version of your product for testing under market conditions.FIRST MARKET VALIDATIONGreat! Youve build your product and you make your first customers happy. Congratulations! This is what we love about being entrepreneurs ?? You learn from your customers feedback and iterate on your business model in order to optimize your product market fit.SINGLE MARKET VALIDATION, EXPANSION AHEADYou achieved product market fit in a single market (e.g. upper premium market for shoes in the US) and now you are keen to expand to further markets. This market extension can be geographically (= further countries) or product related (= add new product segments such as jeans or furniture). The challenge is that for the new markets you might not have enough market insights, contacts or capital.ESTABLISHED COMPANYYo uve come a long way since you started your business. You sell hundreds of products in multiple countries and are loved by your customers and feared by your competitors. But maybe its time to move on to a new business or retire on an island. ??Now, as you understand your business model specific factors and the stage you are in, lets find the best financing option for your business.FINANCING OPTIONS FOR YOUR BUSINESSBOOTSTRAPPINGThe first and my favorite financing option is bootstrapping. When bootstrapping you finance your business based on internal sources: your personal assets, other parallel businesses, or the revenue of the business itself. The idea of bootstrapping is to cover the cost with the revenues of the business as fast as possible in order to achieve a continuously self-supporting business. This option can be used generally in every stage of your company, but it suits best for the idea stage and concept stage. When to choose: I will boostrapp my company when the capital a nd network requirements are very low (e.g. less than $10k) to achieve break even. Examples of companies which grew by bootstrapping: 37signalsFAMILY FRIENDSThe second option is using assets of your family and friends for growing your business. When you have tested your business model under market conditions and only need a little more resources (aka cash) for optimizing your business or for reaching break even, then asking your family and friends might be a good financing option for you. But be aware that investments from your closest friends and family might worsen if your business fails. Therefore, we recommend asking for a loan under friendly conditions which you will pay back to your friends and family. When to choose: When you only need little financial resources for reaching break even and you are quite damn sure about that, then asking your family and friends might be a good financing option for your business. Examples of companies which grew based on assets of family and fri ends: TBDCROWD FUNDINGThe third financing option is to get funded by people via crowd funding. You just register at a crowd funding website, upload your project decription and why people should finance your project, and then hope for the best. ?? There are different website specific types of crowd funding:Thank you-funding, if the people provide their money for a specific start-up project with no return promised (donation-like)Product-Return-funding, if the people get some product from the start-up project in return for their financingEquity/Debt-funding, if the people gets either equity stake or debt obligation from the startup company in return for their investmentWhen to choose: If your business has a medium need for financing (e.g. $50k to $200k) and you run a B2C business model, then crowd funding might be a good financing option; especially if you go for the Thank you-funding. ?? Examples of companies which grew based on crowd funding: OculusACCELERATORThe fourth financing opt ion is getting funded by an accelerator such as Ycombinator. A good accelerator provides funding for you to build a minimum viable product, test product market fit, get some media traction and make relevant contacts with potential partners. Ycombinator is a good example for this and giving you advice on how to iterate your business model. After you leave the accelerator program you will either have to break even or in most cases you will have to look for follow up financing by venture capitalists. When to choose: If you have a rough idea or concept for a business and love to build your product together with serial entrepreneurs for less than $20k, then using an accelarator program is a good financing choice. Examples of companies funded by an accelerator: FirebaseBUSINESS ANGELThe fifth financing option is to find a business angel. A business angel is a wealthy individual who likes being involved and invested in startups. Many business angels are corporate executives or entrepreneurs, so you can learn from them while using their network. Business angels typically invest between $50k and $250k.When to choose: If you need a substantial amount for testing your business model assumptions or for reaching break even while having a close exchange with some experienced business angel, then this financing option should be considered.Examples for business angel financed companies: GoogleVENTURE CAPITALThe sixth financing option is to fund your business via venture capital. Venture capitalist look for highly disruptive and hockey-stick like growing companies that they can invest in $500k to $$20m in equity. When to choose: If your company is growing quickly and is serving an innovative solution while not being profitable yet, then venture capitalist might be a good financing solution as they will provide you with capital and contacts.Examples of companies financed by venture capitalists: TwitterPRIVATE EQUITYThe seventh financing option is to get bought out by private equit y. Private equity investors buy your company, takeover management control and try to increase the value of your company. When to choose: If you would like to retire from business, dont find a successor or just want to cash in, then selling your company to a private equity investor might be a good option. This is only applicable to mature companies.Examples of private equity financed companies: Dell

Essay on “Dark Film” and Sunset Blvd. - 1072 Words

Film noir, by translation alone, means dark film, and by that measurement Sunset Boulevard certainly fits the genre. A gloomy story that follows a jaded and sarcastic protagonist, Joe Gillis from his initial dire circumstances to his untimely death, Sunset Blvd. earns the description â€Å"dark† several times over. But there is more to film noir than crushingly depressing plotlines. There are common motifs and icons that are found in most film noirs, such as crime, dark alleys, guns and alcohol. Deeper than this, film noir features certain visual elements, character archetypes, and themes that create a unique style of film. Although some have argued that Sunset Blvd. fails to represent some of these elements, it has become known as one of the†¦show more content†¦Every piece of imagery, down to Norma Desmond’s clutching, claw-like hands is geared toward eliciting an ominous and menacing feel. In frame #4, a long shot gives a view into Norma’s mansion. He r multitudes of portraits litter the area, and despite the large size of the room an oppressive, low key lighting results in a close, claustrophobic atmosphere. The gothic style architecture and arching windows along with the cluttered interior convey a feeling of something that once was great but has fallen into disrepair. All this creates a perfect metaphor for Norma’s fading fame and career, which is the main purpose of the settings in film noirs. The dark themes and sinister storylines are mirrored with great attention to detail in the visual aspects of a film noir. Film noir employs several character archetypes to tell a story. Cultural changes and shifts in gender roles of post WWII America unsettled men when many women refused to regress back into traditional housewife tasks. This fear was manifested in cinema’s femme fatale. Deceptive and manipulative, femme fatales were there to seduce, betray, and destroy the film noir hero. Norma, along with being deranged, is all of these things. She is at home in her eerie film noir setting. Her movements showing her as a self absorbed echo of her career in silent era films and her voice and facial expressions set the listener on edge. Analysis of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - 866 Words

â€Å"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight† is the classic tale of a knight of the round table who takes up the challenge of the mysterious Green Knight. The poem begins with the Green Knight’s sudden arrival and his declaration of his proposition: a knight may strike him, and then a year and one day from then he will return the blow. This tale is most well-known for dealing with the themes of a knight’s code of chivalry, loyalty, resisting temptation, and keeping one’s word. While the whole poem is full of great lines that beautifully deliver the message, one of the best passages come at the end of the poem after Sir Gawain has managed to survive his second encounter with the Green Knight. This passage perfectly encompasses the various themes of the poem, as it deals with all of the trials Gawain has faced up until that point and also explains how he deals with the shame he feels for surviving the game in the way he did. â€Å"But no wonder if a fool finds his way into folly and be wiped of his wits by womanly guile- it’s the way of the world. Adam fell because of a woman, and Soloman because of several, and as for Samson, Delilah was his downfall, and afterwards David was bamboozled by Bathsheba and bore the grief. The team does a good job staying motivated and satisfied, and also performs well. However, there are moments the team struggles due to differences in attitudes, emotions, and values. We will write a custom essay sample on Motivation, Satisfaction, and Performance or any similar topic only for you Order Now The team manager strives to implement ways to keep the team where it should be. The plan will address the ways to keep the team motivated, satisfied and preforming well. Motivation, Satisfaction, and Performance The team currently has one thing that motivates them, satisfies them, and keeps them performing well, bonuses. The team works on different projects throughout the year. Meeting the deadlines on these projects keeps the team performing well which in turn earns them a bigger bonus check which motivates and satisfies them. However, there have been several instances where the team has not met a deadline and it has caused them their bonus for the project. This then causes issues between the team members and keeps them from performing well, being satisfied, and being motivated. Motivation In order to increase team motivation, the manager has come up with two suggestions; get connected and show the team appreciation. The best way to get connected with your team is to build relationships with them. It is very important to let your team know you have their best interest in mind. By doing so, you also build trust. Very rarely do employees do more than just the minimum when they do not feel like you will do more for them. The key here is to establish a professional relationship, not a friendship. By establishing these relationships and getting connected with your team, you will increase their motivation. (Kearns, 2010) Showing the team appreciation is also something that will increase the motivation within a team. Doing simple gestures like bringing in donuts or bagels (something your team enjoys), shows you are thinking of them and appreciate their hard work. It is important that when deciding to do this, it is not overdone. Team members can start to expect such a gesture and you don’t want that happening. Satisfaction The team has expressed major dissatisfaction when it comes to working long days for several weeks at a time. In order to overcome this dissatisfaction, the team manager has proposed the team take turns in deciding a schedule for the week. There are several rules that need to be taken into account, like hours of operation. By implementing this type of plan, the employees will be allowed to work out schedules that satisfy all of them and they get a sense of more than just work back. (Improve Your Employees’ Job Satisfaction, 2004) Performance The most important thing to increase performance is to give regular performance reviews. This ensures that the team members and the team manager are all on the same page. While in a team, it’s important to discuss team reviews as well. As a manager, it is important to do this so that the team as a whole knows how they are doing. It allows for corrections and for the team to know how well they are doing. Strengths are a great focus point, however it is also important to address the weaknesses so they can be corrected. (McCormick, 2012) The Plan The following is a detail of what the plan is for motivation, satisfaction, and performance. Months 1-3 * Inform team members of the plan * 1st individual and team performance reviews * Set expectations Start developing a professional relationship * Set expectations * Team manager only: Treat the team (bagels, donuts, etc. ) * Set schedule * Discuss rules for schedules during long projects * Set expectations Months 4-6 * 2nd individual and performance reviews * Evaluate schedule setting for long projects * Evaluate professional relationships Months 7-12 * 3rd and 4th individual and performance reviews * S chedule setting for long projects * Continue building professional relationships At the end of the year, there will be a yearly evaluation taking into account all the evaluations for the year. It is a good way to show your team how far they’ve come. At this time, any changes that the team believes should be made can be addressed. References Improve Your Employees’ Job Satisfaction. News of the Ethics and Social Responsibility

Introduction The traditional business dictum â€Å"everything that undergoes measurement matters† has been of great application in concerns of ethics and social responsibility. If information and metrics become combined with innovation and intelligibility, ethics and social responsibility on concerns of the community can be rapidly replaced with fact-anchored study and argument.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on News of the Ethics and Social Responsibility specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Like Apple Inc., Nike Inc. is a good example of a company that is committed to ethics and social responsibility (Jones and George 212-215). Actually, Nike stated that an independent board of policymaker advisers once affirmed that the volume of data contained in an ethics and social responsibility report of more than 170 pages was very devastating and necessitated being rewritten. Importance of Ethics and Social Responsibil ity It is commonly believed that ethics and social responsibility can raise a company’s income thus a lot of big companies are aggressively involved in it (Connor par. 2-5). Nevertheless, a number of managers and stakeholders are not conscious of the study concerning this vital topic. The majority of managers and stakeholders consider that ethics and social responsibility can enhance reverence for their companies in the market, and this can lead to increased sales, upheld loyalty of workers, and attracted excellent human resources to the companies. In addition, ethics and social responsibility concentrating on sustainability concerns can reduce costs and boost efficiency. An additional gain for public companies is that insistent ethics and social responsibility operations might assist the companies in building reputation. As evident in the case of Nike Inc., ethics and social responsibility is important to managers and other stakeholders since it demands that partners’ management performances revere the rights of personnel, reduce the influence on the surroundings, offer a secure and healthy place of work, and support the welfare of every worker. When given the chance, each member of the Nike team has accountability to support conformity with the Code of Conduct, in addition to reporting every case of non-conformity witnessed (Connor par. 3-7).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? In this regard, corporate citizens are responsible not only to managers, but also to stakeholders like workers, clients, suppliers, and the community. Challenges A number of the challenges that Nike Inc. has encountered encompass issues of ecological sustainabi lity with the company standing by its vision of attaining a closed-loop production sculpt that aims at creating no waste in its supply chain by having products and substances that can be endlessly reused. The case of Nike is a good representation of what can arise if a company starts reporting frequently and profoundly, and with a clear dedication to intellectual sincerity, concerning critical matters. For Nike, industry and human rights persist as an utmost priority and societal concern. Nike’s three major products, equipment, shoes, and attire are manufactured in over 500 contract factories that hire more than 700,000 employees in 47 nations across the globe (Connor par. 4-9). The challenges that contract attire plants encounter include making multiple brands that make it hard for them to sustain value. It has been very challenging for Nike to supervise contract factories and ensure that they retain excellent working environments, salaries, and overtime just to mention a fe w. In assessing where they erred, the managers and stakeholders of Nike Inc. found a constant pattern. A concentration on inspection against some guidelines created success in employees’ operations, but seldom brought total modification in ethics and social responsibility. To enable sustainable advancement, the managers of Nike Inc. found that they needed to adjust the manner in which they interrelated with the entire supply chain. As the managers reported, a potential solution would entail joining hands with other products on factory inspection and, perhaps very critical, operating with their business rivals concerning searching for a solution to their difficulties (Connor par. 4-10).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on News of the Ethics and Social Responsibility specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Nevertheless, some calls for advancements could demand that Nike act unaccompanied. For instance, demanding that factories make a lot of styles is among the greatest subscribers to overtime in the attire factories. Nike had to employ ethics and social responsibility to lessen such pressures through decreasing the quantity of apparel designs and collaborating with factories to boost efficiency via lean manufacturing techniques. Conclusion A number of critics of ethics and social responsibility consider that it does not play a key role in the success of companies. Nevertheless, from cases of companies like Nike and Apple, it is evident that commitment to ethics and social responsibility lead to attainments of set goals (Jones and George 124-135). Nike’s endeavors offer an excellent instance of the manner in which ethics and social responsibility can create excellent gathering of information, development of systems of measurement, and setting of benchmarks. The improvements witnessed in Nike Inc. after its commitment to ethics and social responsibility made the managers and stakeholders le arn that transparency is a positive feature rather than a risk. To sum it up, corporate citizenship is turning out to be highly significant for the sustained well-being of companies although the majority of them struggle to get a return on invested capital from socially responsible operations.
